Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ'S)

1. Are Tattoos Safe?

Yes, providing that you go to a reputable tattoo studio. The latter includes sterilized equipment and training in bloodborne pathogens for the body art community. We only use Health Canada and AHS approved disposables including tattoo ink. Clients are required to be open and honest about any medical conditions that you may have prior to getting a tattoo. This also applies to any esthetic services.

2. Are Medical Esthetics Services Safe?

Yes.  We only use Health Canada and AHS approved equipment. Clients are required to be open and honest about any medical conditions that you may have prior to getting an esthetic service. Failure to divulge pertinent information may result in unforeseen yet preventable side effects.

3. Does Getting a Tattoo Hurt?

Pain varies from person to person. There will be parts of your body that will hurt very little whilst other areas may cause more discomfort. You can help prepare by getting plenty of rest and eating well before your appointment. If this is your first tattoo, start with a small design that can be built upon in the future if you choose to get another tattoo.

4. Does Getting Derma Needling (also known as Micro Needling) or Skin Rejuvenation Hurt?

Pain varies from person to person. However, to help minimize any discomfort, we use Zensa Numbing Cream. The latter is especially required for Derma Needling. Skin Rejuvenation is a mild treatment, especially when coupled with Zensa Numbing Cream. You can also further help prepare in advance by ensuring that you have rested well prior to your appointment, have remained hydrated, and have eaten.

5. Should I Use Numbing Cream?

This is a debatable topic amongst many tattoo artists. Some say never use it because it can affect the quality of the tattoo whilst others state that it has no negative effects providing that the tattoo artist takes their time - meaning they have to go slower than usual to ensure that the needle penetrates the skin and the ink sets. Furthermore, in rare cases, numbing creams can cause infections. Thus, if you have a low pain threshold or are planning to get a tattoo in a sensitive area, you will need to weigh the pros and cons yourself. This can be purchased at our studio during your. Not all numbing creams are equal, thus be sure to be mindful of the product that you choose to buy. We only carry Zensa Numbing Cream as the latter is Health Canada and AHS approved. We always have some in stock as we use it for several clinical esthetic services. Clients should apply the numbing cream generously in the area to be tattooed at least 45 minutes prior to your appointment. You can use saran wrap to keep the numbing cream from drying.

Nota Bene: Effects vary from client to client and depends on numerous factors including but not limited to how quickly you metabolize the numbing cream. Speak to us during your consultation for further details.

6. Can I Bring a Friend/Children/Emotional Support Animal?

You are encouraged to bring a friend or family member. However, children are not permitted to remain during your tattoo or esthetic appointment unless they are old enough to avail of our Tabby Toe Beans Services (see pricing). Regarding animals, they are NOT permitted in the studio under any circumstances. The latter is due to health and safety reasons and counter AHS and Health Canada guidelines.

7. How Old Do You Have To Be To Get a Tattoo?

18 Years Old. We do not tattoo minors even with parental consent. Alberta is the number 1 province in Canada for tattoo removal. Coincidence? You decide.

8. How Old Do You Have To Be To Avail of an Esthetic Service?

Minors can avail of several services providing that they have parental consent. Parents must be present for all treatment services. Typically, other than the Madeleine Facial, minors may come to us for clinical reasons including but not limited to acne treatments and scar resurfacing. A doctor's note may be required.

9. Can I Bring My Own Tattoo Design?

Yes. However, be prepared to re-work or re-imagine your design as your idea may not be able to be tattooed. The tattoo not only has to look good but equally as important, it needs to fit your body just right and stand the test of time. This could be as simple as increasing the size of the tattoo to make it work or removing elements that your artist knows (from experience) won't work. However, the tattoo artist reserves the right to refuse any project.

10. Can You Freshen Up My Existing Tattoo?

Absolutely. We specialize in Tattoo Restorations. We have over 60 Eternal Inks to choose from! Bringing an old tattoo to life is as rewarding for the client as it is for us. We have completed several refreshes over the years with excellent results.

11. Do You Do Piercings?

We are working to find a part/full time piercer that can meet the demands and needs of our community. Once found, they will have a prominent spot on our website! If you or someone you know is looking for a spot to practice this body art form, send them to us!

12. Will My Tattoo Fade Over Time?

Absolutely. This is especially true of tattoos that are not anchored with black lining ink. Water colour tattoos, for example, will not only fade but can in fact disappear almost entirely in just a couple of years (with some notable exceptions of course). Photo Realism is also known for fading over time. However, when it comes to the latter and regular tattoos, the best way to ensure your tattoo lasts is by taking care of it! Hustle Butter is one such product that will keep your tattoos looking great for years to come!

13. When Should I NOT Get a Tattoo or an Esthetic Treatment?

You should NOT get a tattoo or an esthetic treatment if you are pregnant, sick, intoxicated, on prescription medication that impairs judgment, under the influence of non-prescriptive drugs, pre or post surgery, if you are undecided as to what you want, when you are sunburned when you are being pressured into it, etc. Another contraindication is Accutane! You can not get a tattoo or even an esthetic service for 6-12 months after being off said drug! If you have or had cancer, note that you will also have to wait upwards of 12 months from the date of your last treatment prior to getting one of our services.

14. When is the Best Time of Year to Get a Tattoo?

Ironically, the majority of people tend to get fresh ink in summer. This is actually the worst time to get a tattoo because you the sun is damaging to tattoos and will increase the risk of poor healing, fading, and possibly infection. The summer is also bad because you are likely going to the beach, swimming, not using sunscreen, tanning, etc. Thus, ideally, you should be getting your tattoo during the spring, autumn, or winter. However, should you find yourself itching to get some ink please follow our Tattoo Aftercare Instructions!

15. What Happens if I Am Late For My Appointment?

Life happens. we understand. However, if you are more than 15 minutes late we may have to reschedule your appointment - particularly if we have another appointment after you. In the event that you need to reschedule, we require an email, phone call, or text 24 hours in advance. Please be aware that we are booked several weeks in advance. If you reschedule, your new appointment will be at the mercy of the almighty schedule.

16. What If I Am a No Show For My Appointment? Do I Lose My Deposit?

Yes. Your deposit is forfeited. You will need to place a new deposit in order to secure a new appointment. Deposits are taken only for tattoo appointments.

17. Do I Have to Pay for Touch-Ups?

A Supply fee of $50.00 plus GST is charged for touch ups regardless of the size of the tattoo.

18. Do Your Gift Certificates Expire?

We also wish to remind past, present, and future clients of the following information:

1. Gift Certificates Do Not Expire! It is illegal in Alberta to add an expiry date to a gift certificate.

2. Gift Certificates are non refundable nor are they redeemable for cash. This includes gift certificates received as a present or purchased/won via a charity event.

3. Gift Certificates can he applied towards store credit for products or services offered directly by Mario RJ Corbin (owner). They cannot be applied towards products or services offered by external vendors or independent contractors that partner with Hedgehog Inklings.

Hedgehog Inklings has donated over $2500 in gift certificates to a variety of worthy causes in Claresholm in 2023. We have been proud to support and build community ties. If you have one of our gift certificates from one of the many causes that you chose to support, we look forward to serving you and encourage you to reach out to us this month to book appointments for either a tattoo or aesthetic treatment.

However, it should not have to be said but please do not ask us to refund your gift certificate for cash if you purchased one from a charity event especially. 🫤 The money you paid for said certificate did not go to Hedgehog Inklings. We donated the certificates. The money went to the charity that you chose to support! Hence, such a request is absurd. 🙄

While our services may not be for everyone, we encourage you to either purchase one of our many products that  we offer or simply sell your gift certificate to a third party who would appreciate them. The latter also applies to gift certificates received as a present and is a general rule for all gift certificates.

19. How Much Should I Tip For Services Rendered?

I enjoy baked goods such as cheese cake. Honestly, we leave this to the discretion of clients. We would rather tattoo you than not at all if the cost of a tip is what is preventing you from purchasing one of our services. The latter also applies to any esthetic services that we offer.
